"Michigan Compiled Law 51.282 basically says that inmates who work within the facility can earn what's called sheriff's good time," Ferguson said. "And so, they can get time off of their sentence at a specified rate."

Strampel has been working within the jail, allowing him to qualify for sheriff's good time, according to Ferguson.

"Any inmate, not just Mr. Strampel, can qualify to work within the jail and if they ... meet the standards and qualifiers they can work within the jail," Ferguson said.

Strampel was sentenced to one year in Ingham County Jail by Judge Joyce Draganchuk in August 2019. During his trial, witnesses testified that Strampel sexually harassed and assaulted them, made inappropriate comments and abused his power as dean.

His conviction stems from two counts of willful neglect in his role as former MSU doctor Larry Nassar's boss and misconduct in office, which is a felony. He received one year for each count of willful neglect and 11 months for his misconduct in office.

The sentences were to be served concurrently.

In December 2019, Strampel permanently surrendered his license to practice medicine and was ordered to pay the State of Michigan $35,000.

Strampel is also cited as a defendant in a recent lawsuit. Strampel is being sued, along with MSU and former MSU medical resident Michael Phinn in which he was under Strampel's primary supervision. This lawsuit stems from an incident in which a woman's private intimate photos were allegedly hacked and obtained by Phinn.

Strampel's release date is projected for April 3 based on the history of his behavior at the jail, according to Ferguson. This date is dependent on Strampel's conduct, such as the continuation of work or behavior in compliance with MCL 51.282.
