Michigan State President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MSU Executive Vice President of Administration Satish Udpa and City of East Lansing Mayor Mark Meadows will speak at a ribbon cutting ceremony for the installation of a two-way protected bike lane on Bogue Street at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 15 between Grand River Avenue and Shaw Lane on Bogue Street. This will be Stanley's first public event since officially beginning as president Aug. 1.
The plan includes temporary installation of a protected two-way track in place of the outside lane of southbound Bogue Street, with a tentative schedule of mid-August to the end of October.
The East Lansing City Council heard the presentation for the pilot program in July. The pilot project is designed to study if pedestrian bicyclist safety is improved in the high-traffic area. A similar study published in May found bicycle infrastructure makes streets safer with data over 13 years in 12 U.S. cities.
The ceremony opens the first protected bicycle path in mid-Michigan this week, a city release said.
