On Oct. 19, MSU's Residence Halls Association (RHA) invited students in from the cold and rain to enjoy 'Cupcakes and Condoms' in Shaw Hall.
RHA is a student body of government known for organizing Campus Center Cinema film screenings and funding Condom Connection in various residence halls across campus.
RHA organized the event to educate students in campus residence halls about the importance of sexual health and safety. A variety of organizations were present to answer questions and provide information about topics like identities and expression of sexuality, resources existing on campus for sexual health and empowering students to advocate for themselves no matter their background.
“We kind of wanted to see what applicable groups would be able to be useful here,” said Brooke Rosin, RHA director of public relations. “We wanted to have an event where you could have everything you could possibly need; straight, bi, trans, lesbian, all of the above.”
The Women’s Council at MSU represented their organization with information on meetings and the kinds of sexual health resources available to women in the community.
Condoms are prominently provided in residence halls as well as health centers on campus, but that selection does not always include female condoms.
According to the representatives of the Women’s Council, MSU’s Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay and Transgender Resource Center provides access to female condoms and dental dams. These products can also be found through MSU’s Student Health and Wellness Services on campus and at Planned Parenthood locations off campus.
President of PRIDE People of Color Coalition Brianna McClendon recommended the LBGT Resource Center as an accessible place for students to find information about sexual health.
Horticulture junior RightEus Tipton also discussed the importance of identity and well-being. According to Tipton, finding a label that best fits your own identity is how “the person understands the best, because the person identifies with it and they use it themselves and that’s how it is.”
By helping guide students to resources on campus that deal with identity, health and safety, RHA hopes students will ask more questions and not be afraid to reach out for answers about potentially uncomfortable subjects.
Representatives from the Center for Sexual Health Promotion stocked their table with male and female condoms, flavored lube and information for students about safe sex and how to seek out STI testing on campus.
The Center for Sexual Health can also help students find free and anonymous HIV testing and counseling in addition to confidential STI screenings on campus.
