Michigan State men's basketball coach Tom Izzo announced at his team’s first practice Wednesday afternoon that junior Joshua Langford and senior Matt McQuaid have been selected as captains for the 2018-19 season.

“We’ve got two captains that they (team) picked last week,” Izzo said. “And it’s Josh Langford and Matt McQuaid. And I thought the players did a good job, they talked about it, they decided there’s no question those are two of our hardest working guys, but also two of our guys that have some experience, and I think that’s going to be important for us as we move forward."

Experience is something Izzo is looking for, as his entire starting unit last season consisted of underclassmen.

“I still felt at times last year, we were a little inexperienced,” Izzo said. “And I think for the most part, we are going to be a lot more experienced. We’ve had some guys that have taken huge jumps this summer."

Langford and McQuaid are replacing last year's captains, Miles Bridges and Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn Jr. Bridges was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA Draft earlier this year, while Nairn departed after his senior season.

Langford had a streaky sophomore campaign with the Spartans, but posted overall solid numbers, averaging 11 points per game while shooting 42 percent from the floor and 40 percent from three-point range. He was recently listed by NCAA.com as one of college basketball’s top-six breakout candidates for this upcoming season.

McQuaid saw a season-high in playing time last season, averaging over 20 minutes per game, while putting up six points per contest and shooting 39 percent from beyond the arc.
