Ex-MSU doctor Larry Nassar in police custody following Attorney General investigation

November 21, 2016

The Ingham County Sheriff's office confirmed that ex-MSU faculty member Larry Nassar is in police custody following an investigation by the Michigan Attorney General.

According to court records obtained by the Lansing State Journal, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette's office obtained a felony warrant for arrest on three charges of first-degree sexual conduct with a person under 13, attributed to Nassar. For these charges, Nassar could face up to life in prison.

The Michigan Attorney General's office declined to comment on this story, but did confirm that there was a press conference planned for 1 p.m. Tuesday to discuss the Nassar investigation.

Nassar also worked as a doctor for many years for USA Gymnastics until last year because of "athlete concerns."

The arrest and court records follow a string of escalating investigations into Nassar's actions as a doctor, for both his MSU and USA Gymnastics careers.

Nassar began working for MSU in 1997, MSU spokesman Jason Cody confirmed in a previous State News article. Nassar was investigated on similar charges by the university in 2014, but nothing came from them.

After those allegations Nassar was placed on "certain employment requirements." As new reports came into view, starting with an investigation by the Indianapolis Star, Nassar's employment with MSU was deferred and later terminated when university investigations found he had not complied with those requirements.

According to a previous State News article, there are many reports on a public MSU Police log that could be linked to Nassar. On Nov. 10, The State News reported there were at least 42 reported instances of sexual assault occurring in areas Nassar would've worked. The reports on MSU's log began piling up after an Olympic gymnast shared her story with the Indianapolis Star. Since then, more reports that could be linked to Nassar have appeared to the log.

Nassar is facing other lawsuits related to sexual abuse as well, some alongside former national team coordinators Bela and Marta Karolyi.
