New musical group forms out of Holmes Hall

October 20, 2016

Drawing inspiration from the walk sign calling out “wait” on Hagadorn Road, the MSU Rap Gang used its repetitive sound to make a beat and form their musical group.

This group is composed of human biology freshman Joseph Hrabnicky, chemical engineering freshman Vincent Milano, undecided freshman Zain Salman, astrophysics freshman Noah Zalapi and organic chemistry freshman Tanner Porter, all roommates and suite mates in East Holmes Hall.

A week or two after the school year began, the group walked over to McDonald’s and were stopped on Hagadorn Road. The walk sign repeated the word “wait” and instead of growing irritated, Hrabnicky started jokingly making a beat out of it. The rest of the men chuckled and Salman sarcastically said they should form a rap gang.

Taking the idea seriously, Hrabnicky came back to his dorm, opened the computer program GarageBand and created a beat. After showing the rest of the guys, they all decided to form the group.

“We kind of show that something that starts off as a joke can turn into something much bigger and better and we can actually show what we can do as a group of friends,” Milano said.

Though none had any musical experience prior to this, aside from playing a few instruments, they were confident and optimistic about the group.

The lyrics to their music are based on MSU, campus, landmarks and everyday life as a student. They also try to incorporate some of their inside jokes into their music so they can enjoy listening back to them in the future.

“Whenever we hear it we can think of times, as if it was a time post and we can look back at it,” Milano said.

The group plans on releasing a song all about MSU they’ve been promoting on SoundCloud.

“(The song) we’re working on is actually a pretty legitimate song that you could bump too just for fun," Hrabnicky said. "You don’t even have to go to MSU to enjoy it. It’s just kind of like an anthem to us.”

The men hope to continue putting together new songs and making them more well-known throughout the MSU community. As far as what they’re most excited for, they all agree it’s recognition throughout the student body.

“I told Zain it just warms my heart when we walk out of the elevator and someone’s like, ‘Whoa, look it’s MSU Rap Gang!’” Hrabnicky said.
