MSU's University Activities Board celebrates 100th homecoming this week

September 28, 2015

MSU's University Activities Board, or UAB, is celebrating MSU's 100th homecoming this week with the message of "Spartans Take the World Stage." The UAB has planned several events for this homecoming week, including a performance by Desmond Jones at MSU's Summer Circle Theatre and free cosmic bowling at the MSU Union.

The UAB was the first student organization to be established at MSU in 1916 under the name the Union Activities Board and will celebrate its own 100 year anniversary later this year. After merging with the Campus Center, another student organization on campus in 2001, they became what students know today as the University Activities Board.

“They do a lot of different events so they at least give students a lot to do all of the time, so I think that's a pretty good impact you know you can always go do something with UAB at least once a week,” marketing senior Jessie Smith said.

In the past, UAB has offered film screenings, open mic nights and concerts with the likes of Easton Corbin. Not only do these events provide entertainment and an opportunity for students to express themselves, they also aid in community cohesion.

“I feel like they always bring together a really wide variety of people to socialize and grow together as a community,” media and information senior Chloe Jennings said.

To the student body’s benefit, the UAB operates without the use of student tax dollars, mainly relying on funding from Residential and Hospitality Services, corporate sponsors, fundraising and vendor sales, according to the UAB’s website.

“Yeah it's always good to hang out, like it's awesome too with college kids, you’re on a budget so it's cost effective or free or whatever so that’s really cool,” environmental studies and agriculture science senior Kelli Gallagher said.

Business and philosophy junior Zac Thornton believes the events UAB hosts are great to go to when hanging out with new friends, as well as giving freshmen things to do on campus if they don’t know about many events that are going on, or if they just want to make new friends.
