ASMSU conclude meetings of year passing 2014-2015 budget

April 24, 2014

ASMSU, MSU’s undergraduate student government culminated the 2013-2014 academic year by holding its final general assembly meeting on Thursday.

The general assembly passed two bills; the approval of the 2014-2015 academic year budget and code reforms in the ASMSU manual.

The budget passed with a vote of 15 to six and the code passed unanimously. The budget needed at least a two-thirds vote in order to pass.

According to the bill to amend to the current Code of Operations, “The 50th session deemed it necessary to update the current Code of Operations to be in line with current procedure.”

The bill was introduced by Vice President for Internal Administration Teresa Bitner and seconded by Kathryn Maass, who will soon be stepping into Bitner’s role during the next session.

The code needed to be updated because of a merger between two different funding boards now called the Student Allocations Board. The code changes were a “housekeeping” issue Bitner said in a previous interview.

The budget was introduced at a general assembly meeting on April 14. The student tax of $18 per semester will continue to fund services such as free blue books, iClicker rentals, legal services and the MSU Readership Program among others.

More than $400,000 will go toward funding legal services and almost $200,00 to fund the Red Cedar Log, MSU’s free yearbook, the two highest costs for ASMSU’s services.

ASMSU’s undergraduate tax subtotal for the summer, fall and spring semesters in the 2014-2015 school year based on projected enrollment is $1,628,781.07, according to documentation calculated by Senior Analyst Dee McKay.

Newly elected President James Conwell did not appoint anyone to the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs.

College of Social Science Representative Evan Schrage said Conwell will appoint someone during the summer and an election for the position will be held in the fall.
