MSU football improves Academic Progress Rate score

June 11, 2013

According to the latest NCAA Academic Progress Rate scores, Big Ten ratings are in good standing across the board.

Academic Progress Rate, or APR, is a measure of academic success for Division I schools. A minimum of a 930 average over the most recent two years is required for schools to compete in the 2013-14 postseason.

Division I sports teams calculate their APR based on the eligibility, graduation and retention of each scholarship student-athlete. Rate is acquired based on the performance of the previous four years.
Teams with an APR below 925 are subject to penalties, such as scholarship losses and reductions to practice time.

MSU is tied for ninth with Minnesota with an APR score of 955, improving 12 points from 2012.
The full Big Ten rankings for football are Wisconsin (985), Ohio State (982), Nebraska (975), Indiana (963), Iowa and Penn State (961), Illinois (960), MSU and Minnesota (955), Purdue (953) and Michigan (951).

For the 2011-12 season, MSU’s APR scores were 978 for baseball, 955 for football and 971 for men’s basketball.

MSU’s total APR average falls below the four-year Division I APR average of 974.

Due to low APR scores, 18 teams will miss out on the 2013-14 postseason, a higher total than the 15 that missed out on the 2012-13 season.
