Downtown East Lansing statue stolen Thursday morning

June 21, 2013

Thursday morning, the Laura sculpture located in the Children’s Sculpture Garden at Downtown East Lansing’s Fountain Square was stolen. The 100 pound bronze sculpture was valued at more than $50,000, according to East Lansing Police Department, or ELPD, Captain Jeff Murphy.

“Our detectives has been working on it most of the day and they have gotten some tips,” Murphy said. “There are no real suspects at the moment but they are steadily working towards it. We’ll have more information next week.”

The sculpture is a 30-inch bronze statue of a little girl holding a bird and was donated by Tomie Raines in 2004. The ELPD is also investigating the disappearance of a bronze duck sculpture stolen from the Children’s Sculpture Garden early September of last year.

The Children’s Sculpture Garden is located on the northeast corner of the Albert and M.A.C intersection. It has a variety of sculptures, an interactive fountain and gardens for visitors to enjoy.

The ELPD has asked anyone with more information on this to contact the police department or send in a tip to 1-877-ELPD-TIPS. ELPD said they would be happy to send crew to pick up the statue.
