Patricia Schenck, an assistant professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine, officially resigned from MSU effective April 12, said university spokesman Jason Cody. Schenck was previously responsible for the alleged neglect of 17 dogs in her Clinton County home.

Schenck originally was charged with felony neglect of 10 or more animals after a search of her home found more than 17 dogs and 2 cats in poor condition this past December. Schenck pleaded no contest to lesser charges of malicious destruction of property over $200 and under $1,000, according to a previous State News article.

When the dogs were collected from their respective living conditions, many of the dogs appeared to be slightly underfed and had coats matted with feces.

Schenck was allowed to keep four of the dogs, one of them being older and unexpected to live much longer. She was also required to have, at least, monthly checks by animal control to check on the well-being of the animals during her probation in addition to paying $10,000 for the care of the animals while the case was pending and $1,450 in additional costs and fines.

The animals that remained were likely to be put up for adoption at the Capital Area Humane Society, 7095 W. Grand River Ave., in Lansing.
