From a young age, singing has been a top priority for comparative cultures and politics sophomore Maggie Barnard.

“You get to be yourself,” Barnard said. “With acting, you’re taking on the role of someone else — with singing and performing, you really get to show the audience who you are.”

Also a member of student-led a cappella group, Capital Green, Barnard will perform Saturday at the Roial Creative Showcase and Open Mic Night. Hosted by Roial Players, a student-run performing arts group, the showcase will kick off at 9 p.m. in the RCAH Theatre. It will include singing, dancing and acting improvisation.

For her part of the event, Barnard will sing Rihanna’s most recent single, “Stay.”

“I always like Rihanna’s voice, and I truly like the soul she sings with,” she said. “I think my voice fits the song really well.”

With no auditions and one rehearsal prior to the event, showcase coordinator Nick Turinsky said he’s taking a leap of faith and putting trust in the performers.

“At first I was a little nervous, but it’s gonna be a fun night,” Turinsky said. “We’re one big family, and it’s relaxing. I trust them to do a great job, I have no doubt in my mind.”

The free showcase will receive a visit from the MSU Elite Competitive Dance Team. Stephanie Quillico, the team’s vice president, said she is looking forward to the chance to perform their new jazz routine, which the team has been practicing for about three months.

“It’s definitely more of an intimate setting,” Quillico said. “We’re used to a large crowd. It’s a different venue for us, and we haven’t really worked with (Roial Players) before, so it’s something new.”

After many years of dancing, Quillico said she still looks forward to the opportunity to express herself with each performance.

“It’s the one good thing you look forward to during your day,” she said. “It’s something your heart falls in love with.”

Despite her level of experience, Barnard said the feeling of anxiousness before hitting the stage never goes away.

“I always get a little nervous,” she said. “I’ve been doing it for so long, but you’re putting yourself out there. Confidence is everything when you’re performing.”
