MSU Students Promoting Animal Rights, or SPAR, will host a special screening of the movie “Earthlings” at 7 p.m. on Thursday in room B119 of Wells Hall.
Narrated by actor and producer Joaquin Phoenix, “Earthlings,” is a documentary about the cruelty animals endure for food, entertainment, fashion, and medical research.
The documentary gives a behind-the-scenes look at the treatment of animals at animal shelters, puppy mills, slaughterhouses, and even circuses and sporting events.
President of MSU SPAR Alexis Hinson said she hopes that through the viewing, people will get a better understanding on why animal cruelty is a major issue.
“We hope people understand what goes on in industries that impacts animals, and the impact that it has when you eat meat and leather and fur,” the zoology freshman said. “Also, the cruelty of wide scale meat production. People tend to have a narrow view of what’s going on.”
The film premiered in 2005 at the Artivist Film Festival, winning Best Documentary Feature. It then won Best Content Award at the Boston International Film Festival.
Hinson added the organization also will collect data to see how the documentary changes views on the issue of animal cruelty. After a two and a half year period of inactivation, MSU SPAR hopes the movie showing will bring more students into the group.
“I would also hope that people who come to SPAR will come to some of our meetings and see what the group is about,” Hinson said.
MSU SPAR currently has around 20 members. The organization recently was reactivated in January.
Beyond the movie screening, Hinson said the group is wrapping up the year with only three weeks left in the semester. Next year, Hinson hopes a showing at Sparticipation will add to the group’s growth.
