As Sunday evening draws near and millions of people are expected to tune in to the sporting event that has set records as the most viewed TV program in U.S. history each of the past three years, a couple of former Spartans will get their chance to shine on one of the nation’s biggest stages.

Safety Trenton Robinson and tight end Garrett Celek graduated from MSU a season ago and one year later will play in football’s crown jewel — the Super Bowl — as members of the NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers.

After being part of the winningest senior class in MSU football history, Celek and Robinson took unlikely paths to reach Super Bowl Sunday together.

Celek signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent and Robinson was selected in the sixth round in the NFL draft.

Still, the road from MSU to the big game in New Orleans is one Celek said he’s grateful for and plans to enjoy more than simply the 60 minutes on the field, but all of the hoopla involved with the biggest sporting event in the country.

“It’s been pretty crazy,” Celek said. “I’m going to the Super Bowl and I’m a rookie and that’s pretty exciting. I consider myself lucky to be on a team this good. It’s a great experience.”
