Simon discusses revised plan for MSU

January 29, 2013

On Tuesday morning, President Lou Anna K. Simon met with university administrators, officials and student leaders to speak about the new initiatives of her revised strategic plan for the university — Bolder by Design.

The plan is an update to the previous university strategy, Boldness by Design, which was implemented in 2005.

Boldness by Design ultimately rested upon five pillars to become the “model land-grant university for the 21st century.” These include goals to enhance the student experience, enrich community, economic, and family life, expand international reach, increase research opportunities and strengthen stewardship.

ASMSU President Evan Martinak attended the assembly and said during her talk, Simon spoke about plans for a sixth pillar — one to “advance our culture of high performance,” he said.

Some incentives that lie under this sixth pillar address implementing a smoke-free campus, healthy student behaviors, retention rates, interdisciplinary studies and technology, Martinak said.
According to university spokesperson Jason Cody, there is no formal announcement planned for Bolder by Design.

“This is an ongoing process that will involve many opportunities for discussion,” Cody said in an email. “I am sure it will be mentioned as part of the State of the University as well. There’s not a big unveil planned; it’s a fluid, ongoing conversation.”
