Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero officially green-lit the forwarding of a casino project set to be developed in downtown Lansing.

The news was announced late this morning during a media conference held on the first floor of the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave. Bernero also introduced Aaron Payment, chairman of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians, as the partner for the project.

The project is a beacon of hope for the area and a major opportunity for jobs, said Bernero, and presents the potential of growth for the area. He said the casino will be on the riverfront, attached to the Lansing Center.

Attorney General Bill Schuette previously filed a lawsuit to stop the project. Gov. Rick Snyder also has said he will do whatever possible to stop its construction.

Currently, no official timeline has been set for the casino’s development.
