Volleyball splits weekend road trip in Indiana

October 27, 2012

This weekend was one of highs and lows for the MSU volleyball team, as they won one and lost one in Indiana.

The Spartans (17-7 overall, 5-7 Big Ten) kicked off their weekend against the Hoosiers (10-14, 2-10). MSU knew that Indiana would be a hard team to beat, as they came off two straight victories, and that was prevalent in the first set as they topped the Hoosiers, 26-24.

The Hoosiers took the next set, 25-23, but that is the only one they would seize as the Spartans won in four sets (26-24, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17).

Junior outside hitter Lauren Wicinski led the offense with 16 kills, and senior outside hitter Amy Dentlinger helped the attack with 14 kills.

The Spartans then stayed in-state, as they went on to face Purdue (16-7, 7-5), looking to avenge a five set loss earlier in the season.

Lo and behold, the result was the same, as the Boilermakers took the match in five sets (25-16, 23-25, 30-32, 25-18, 11-15).

Although the team dropped another heartbreaker, head coach Cathy George was pleased with her team’s performance.

“We played hard, fought hard, and played great,” George said.

George also noted that the team played a more balanced game this weekend than in games passed, as they had four players above 10 kills. Wicinski led the team with 21 kills, and junior middle blocker Alexis Mathews held the defense down with 5 total blocks.

Although the team split another weekend in their tough schedule, sophomore libero Kori Moster noted a bright spot in their loss on Saturday.

“We grew as a team mentally and physically this weekend,” Moster said.
