MSU ranks top ten in undergraduate enrollment

October 3, 2012

For the first time in MSU history, enrollment has reached the 48,000 mark, according to statistics recently released by the Office of the Registrar.

Enrollment increased from 47,954 students in fall of 2011 to 48,906 students this fall — a 1.9 percent increase.

According to the U.S. News & World Report, MSU ranks in the top 10 universities in enrollment.

The increase is in part because of back-to-back incoming classes that have been the largest classes in MSU history, with about 8,100 incoming students this fall.

In a previous State News article, MSU Provost Kim Wilcox said the growth was unexpected and the university does not necessarily want the growth to continue.

“We thought this year we would be able to drop the (enrollment) number down a little bit,” Wilcox said. “But (when) more students came, we offered up an option to (more) than we would’ve predicted.”
