Spartan defense yet to concede touchdown as team goes 2-0

September 9, 2012

On Saturday, the No. 10 MSU football team improved to 2-0, knocking off Central Michigan (1-1) 41-7 in Mount Pleasant, Mich.

Junior quarterback Andrew Maxwell played the best game of his young career, completing 20-of-31 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns.

Junior running back Le’Veon Bell added two touchdowns on the ground, and the defense continued its strong play with three turnovers, including interceptions by senior cornerback Johnny Adams and junior safety Isaiah Lewis.

The Spartans will return home next Saturday when they host No. 20 Notre Dame (2-0) at Spartan Stadium (8:00 p.m., ABC)

Dominant defense
It’s only two games into the college football season, but already the Spartans’ defense looks like one of the top units in the nation.

MSU currently ranks eighth in the country in yards allowed, limiting opponents to just 225.5 yards per game, but that’s only the beginning of the group’s dominance.

Of the 20 points MSU has allowed this season, just six have been surrendered by the defense.
Only Florida State and TCU have given up fewer than three points per game.

Meanwhile, a young Spartan offense is still rounding into form, ranking 71st in points per game, even after a 41-point performance against Central Michigan on Saturday.

MSU currently is not among the top 25 in the country in any major offensive category.
