Game day matchup between MSU and Boise State at Spartan Stadium

August 30, 2012

No. 13 MSU vs. No. 24 Boise State
Spartan Stadium
Weather at kickoff: Sunny, 82°

MSU running game vs. Boise State run defense: Boise State head coach Chris Petersen joked that they taped two running backs together to simulate trying to tackle bruising junior Le’Veon Bell. The Broncos lost five defensive linemen to the NFL, and the Spartans should be able to pound the ball. Advantage: MSU

MSU passing game vs. Boise State pass defense: New starting quarterback Andrew Maxwell will be trying to get in sync with an inexperienced receiving corps. Boise State has experienced depth in the defensive backfield, and senior cornerbacks Jerrell Gavins and Jamar Taylor should make life difficult for Maxwell and company. Advantage: Boise State

Boise State running game vs. MSU run defense: The Broncos lose Doug Martin — who rushed for nearly 1,300 yards last season, giving senior D.J. Harper his first chance to take over the load. Harper was impressive as a change of pace last season, averaging nearly five yards a carry with nine touchdowns and, although MSU’s linebackers are stout against the run, the Spartans will be working in two new defensive tackles. Advantage: Even

Boise State passing game vs. MSU pass defense: Like MSU, Boise State will be going with a first-time starter at quarterback and, like Maxwell, junior Joe Southwick will be going against an experienced cornerback duo. Senior cornerback Johnny Adams came back to cap off his career in style, and junior cornerback Darqueze Dennard had the best game of his career the last time MSU took the field against Georgia in the Outback Bowl. Advantage: MSU

Special Teams: The Broncos made only six field goals last season, and with their best kick returner in Martin gone, Boise State will be looking for someone to pick up the slack. For the Spartans, sophomore running back Nick Hill will continue returning kicks, and senior kicker Dan Conroy and sophomore punter Mike Sadler are proven. Advantage: MSU

Prediction: One of the most anticipated season openers in program history will be an exciting game under the lights, with two teams eager to prove themselves out of the gate. Although the Spartans have players to replace on offense, Boise State has holes on both sides of the ball, and a raucous prime-time crowd will be a huge edge for MSU. MSU 27. Boise State 14
