FRIB bill to Senate

June 7, 2012

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, or FRIB, is one step closer to receiving $40 million in funding after several instabilities over government funding in the past few months.

The Energy and Water Appropriations bill, which was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday evening, still needs to be approved by the Senate. If the bill makes it through the Senate as is, it could potentially give $40 million to FRIB, an $18 million increase from the 2013 fiscal year budget proposal released in February from President Barack Obama that only portioned about $22 million to the research project.

FRIB is set to be constructed by 2012, and it likely will bring in $1 billion in new nuclear science research to Michigan in the first year, according to a press release from U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Brighton.

“Michigan State University has long worked to make the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams a centerpiece of America’s research profile and a critical part of Michigan’s economic future,” Rogers said. “Ensuring that it receives dedicated federal funding will continue to help Michigan stand out for hosting one of the premier nuclear physics programs in the country.”
