When one of Kathy Toman’s close friends told her how talented the Sea Cruisers were, she decided she had to see for herself.

So Toman, a Perry, Mich., resident, went to see the band perform Tuesday night to judge its music.

“I’ve never been to these things at Eastwood (Towne Center),” she said. “I thought this would be a good band, and I wanted to check them out.”

The Sea Cruisers, a Lansing-based oldies group, performed from 6-8 p.m. at the first concert of the 10th annual Summer Music Series at the Eastwood Towne Center, 3003 Preyde Blvd., in Lansing.

Emily Desrochers, the general manager of Eastwood Towne Center, said every year she likes to try to begin the series with a performance by the Sea Cruisers because throughout the years, the group has become quite popular among Lansing area residents.

“They’re a local favorite, (and) people get excited to see them,” she said. “We have a lot of people who come to the series, and they grow to anticipate that and expect that they will be playing at the first concert.”

This year’s Summer Music Series, which will take place every Tuesday in Center Court between Mitchell’s Fish Market and Bravo! Cucina Italiana, will run until August 21.

Desrochers said the concerts feature a variety of the same bands every year as well as a few new ones.

Stylistically, the groups are all unique, representing genres ranging from oldies and blues to classic rock, she said.

Don Dove, the drummer and lead vocalist for Sea Cruisers, said his band has played at Eastwood Towne Center more times than he can remember, and he is honored to be selected to start the series off.

“I really appreciate that people come out and have a good time,” he said. I feel really grateful that people support us.”

Dove said he has enjoyed playing in the series in past years, and this show was no different.

“This was a blast,” he said. “It’s just a really nice atmosphere. People come out and have a really good time.”

Haslett, Mich., resident Mike Piper said he has seen Sea Cruisers perform many times in numerous locations, and he loves the group’s music.

“I like the oldies, so that’s good for me,” he said. “I know the words to every song they play.”

Piper also has been to several concerts in Eastwood Towne Center to see other performers, and he said he always enjoys himself.

“I like it,” he said. “Anything outdoors with music that people can come to and enjoy is great.”
