Editor's note: State News to deliver ad via Twitter feeds

March 20, 2012

Kate Jacobson

The times are changing in the media world.

With a new digital era, many news organizations are trying to figure out how to best present information to our readers. We’re all trying out new things — iPhone apps, social media, e-books — and instead of staying stagnant, The State News always tries to be innovative.

To help us ensure we have the resources to get you the news, we here at The State News have been trying our hardest to think of creative ways to do that while at the same time giving readers something they might value.

You can always count on The State News to deliver your news, whether that be in print or on the web, and most recently through our social media presence. Our Twitter account has almost 8,000 followers and is growing by the day.

With an audience that big, we are starting to offer advertised tweets of timely, relevant offers through both our general news Twitter account (thesnews) and our sports Twitter account (thesnews_sports).

To be clear, the editorial staff will have no hand in what goes into the paid advertisements on our Twitter — our advertising staff will still have control and responsibility for that content. Ads will be clearly labeled and we won’t bombard you with a dozen tweets per day. You might see one or two here and there, but there won’t be more than one per day.

Game times also will be blacked out for advertisers, so those of you who count on us to get game updates don’t have to worry about advertisers coming into your news feed.

It’s something that hasn’t been done a lot of places, but we are seeing it at some professional and collegiate newspapers. It’s an innovative move in the media world and something that many news organizations are exploring.

We feel that with changing times we need to embrace it and adapt to what new obstacles are in front of us. If we can be pioneers in a new way to reach our audience — be that with editorial content or advertising — we are willing to do that.

I encourage you to contact us if you have questions about this. Feel free to send me an email, stop by or, if all else fails, just shoot us a tweet.
