Kinesiology freshman Lindsay Parker smiled as she kicked her leg up in the air on Wednesday night.

She seemed to sparkle as the stage lights reflected off of her gold sequined shorts, and the bass from the music she danced to was so loud, it shook the walls of the Auditorium.

Parker and her 11 teammates competed in MTV Night — a dance competition in which 13 teams competed by dancing in performances similar to those from “America’s Best Dance Crew” — at the Auditorium last night as part of Greek Week.

Greek Week, which officially runs through Saturday, is a week’s worth of events in which fraternities and sororities are paired up and compete to raise money for national and local charities, including Wilkins Parkinson’s Foundation.

“Greek Week is our way of showing the community what brotherhood and sisterhood really means,” said communication senior Heather Nykamp, director of sponsorship for the Greek Week Leadership Team and Zeta Tau Alpha member. “It is a bunch of students getting together for a common goal: raising money and trying to raise awareness about all the things that we’re passionate about.”

Nykamp said the event is a chance for the greek community to come together and have a “good sober time,” and the sororities and fraternities who participate take the fundraising and competitions, such as MTV Night, very seriously.

“Some teams even rent out dance studios in the weeks leading up the event,” Nykamp said.

Parker, who performed with other members of the Alpha Phi sorority and members of the Psi Upsilon and Sigma Nu fraternities, said her team has been practicing about three hours most days for the past few weeks to prepare for the competition.

“I danced forever, but coming to college, I don’t dance consistently,” Parker said. “How intense it is now is a wake-up call, but (it) has been really fun to get back in shape and meet new people.”

Throughout Greek Week, the community has been working to raise money for the American Cancer Society and other local charities. At Greek Week’s Relay For Life event on Feb. 4, participants raised more than $230,000, Nykamp said. By Saturday night, she said she hopes the community will have $270,000 to donate to charities.

Tony Biallas — a communication and preveterinary sophomore member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity who danced during the show — feels a personal connection to the charities.

His mother told him that he made his grandfather, who died when Biallas was a baby from lung cancer, proud.

“I never thought I’d hear those words,” Biallas said. “I had a warm feeling in my heart.”
