On Jan. 1, 2013, a new health care policy protecting affordable access to birth control will go into effect. Thanks to the Obama administration, women’s birth control will be covered with no co-pays.
President Barack Obama understands that for me and millions of women, birth control is a fundamental health care issue and a serious economic concern. Although my insurance offers great birth control coverage, many women do not experience the same luxury. A number of Americans don’t understand how expensive birth control prices can be. Even with insurance, women can still pay up to $30 a month for their birth control.
Birth control is good preventative health care, and regardless of faith, many women have found the benefit in it. A survey conducted by the Hart Research Associates reported access to affordable birth control is not only supported by 71 percent of American voters but also by 77 percent of Catholic women voters. Along with the Obama administration, the highly respected nonpartisan Institute of Medicine understands how important it is that birth control be covered with no co-pays. They recognize that birth control is key to improving women’s health and the health of their families.
The bottom line is that President Obama made the right decision for women in this country, and that everyone should be able to benefit from the new health care law. We have the Obama administration to thank for that.
