Genomics and molecular genetics sophomore Bryndan Arnold is passionate about two things: MSU and music.

“Ever since I was about 10 years old, I’ve been talking about how badly I wanted to go here,” he said.

Arnold has dreamed of attending MSU since childhood, but he only began recording his own music a little more than a year ago. And after much encouragement from his roommate, criminal justice sophomore Nickolas Kulick, Arnold decided to combine his two loves and make his own rendition of LMFAO’s hit “Party Rock Anthem,” which he titled “Sparty Rock Anthem.”

“What better way to show my school spirit than with ‘Sparty Rock’?” Arnold said.

Arnold, who refers to himself as Vertigo Blaze in his music, recorded the track over winter break and posted it this month on tweetjamz.com, a website similar to Twitter, on which aspiring musicians can post their music. Within two days of posting, Arnold said the song received hundreds of views.

Arnold felt the first spark of interest in music at the age of 12 when he began working with his cousin, Metro Detroit music-hopeful Tramell Arnold. But his passion for making music has grown recently due to boredom and extra time outside of class.

“I would come back from class and study, then not have anything to do,” Arnold said. “I never imagined myself (making music) until I sat down and did it. It started out as a hobby and turned into a passion.”

The idea for “Sparty Rock Anthem” came to Arnold while he was brainstorming ways to attract a fan base in East Lansing, and he initially wasn’t planning on recording it or posting it online.

But Kulick pleaded with him to take advantage of the large campus of potential fans.

“(Arnold’s) been looking for ways to reach out to other people, and what’s better than to do it here?” he said. “This is a huge campus, and even if it wasn’t his best or favorite work, people would like it because it’s about Michigan State.”

Arnold, who plans to shoot a music video for the song on MSU’s campus in March, said he hopes the song will gain popularity and soon be played at the school’s many sporting events.

Tramell Arnold said he constantly works to help his cousin improve his skills.

“I’ve been helping him step by step,” he said. “I’ll play him something, and he’s always trying to come up with something more clever. We keep each other at our best.”

The two recently began collaborating as a group called DreamChasers and plan to record songs together this upcoming summer.

Tramell Arnold said his cousin has the potential to succeed.

“He’s not like most artists,” he said. “He brings out the most random concepts in his songs. He’s very good with ideas, he’s crazy creative and his lyricism is good.”
