Spartans to take on Georgia at the Outback Bowl

December 4, 2011

To close out the 2011-12 season, the MSU football team will take on Georgia at the Outback Bowl on Jan. 2, 2012 in Tampa Bay, Fla., according to a tweet from Executive Director of MSU Alumni Association Scott Westerman.

This is head coach Mark Dantonio’s fifth-straight bowl appearance in his five seasons at MSU.

The Spartans (10-3) have faced Georgia (10-2) two previous times — both in bowl games. In 1989, MSU fell to the Bulldogs, 34-27, at the Gator Bowl, and in 2009, the teams faced off again at the Capital One Bowl, where the Spartans lost, 24-12.

Despite having four previous bowl appearances under Dantonio, MSU is looking for its first bowl victory since the 2001-02 season — when the Spartans defeated Fresno State, 44-35, at the Silicon Valley Football Classic.

After vying for the Big Ten representation in the Rose Bowl, MSU fell, 42-39, to Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Saturday.
