Awards handed out at MSU football banquet

The No. 12 MSU football team had its annual Spartan Football Awards Banquet after the team returned home from Indianapolis on Sunday at Kellogg Center.

As the all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards with 211 catches for 3,020 yards, senior wide receiver B.J. Cunningham was presented with the Governor’s Award as the team’s most valuable player. He sits second in program history with 25 receiving touchdowns, and he had five catches for 115 yards and three touchdowns in MSU’s 42-39 loss to Wisconsin at the Big Ten championship game.

Cunningham and senior quarterback Kirk Cousins were given the Downtown Coaches Club Award for outstanding senior offense, and senior safety Trenton Robinson was honored with the award for outstanding senior defense.

Robinson was named to the First-Team All-Big Ten by the media and given honorable mention by the coaches, and he is tied at the top of the league with four interceptions this season.

Senior wide receiver Keshawn Martin also received the Downtown Coaches Club Award for outstanding senior special teams player. This season, Martin had 23 punt returns for 271 yards and one touchdown, averaging 11.8 yards per return.

Senior fullback Todd Anderson and sophomore linebacker Denicos Allen were named the most improved players and given the Tommy Love Award. Senior tight end Garrett Celek and junior linebacker Chris Norman represented offense and defense in getting the Jim Adams Award for being unsung heroes this season.

Senior offensive guard Arthur Ray Jr. was presented with the Biggie Munn Award for being the most inspirational player after overcoming cancer and returning to the football field this season.
