School closing to be investigated

November 20, 2011

The East Lansing school district currently is subject to a federal investigation in response to a complaint against the recent decision to close Red Cedar Elementary School.

The complaint alleges that the move to close the school discriminates against the minority population at the school.

At the East Lansing School Board’s Sept. 26 meeting, the board voted to close the school in a 4-3 decision to make way for a proposed renovation of the district’s five other schools if a February 2012 vote allows for the extension of a pre-existing debt levy.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has required the school district to formally respond by Nov. 23 and provide information on the processes that led to the board decision.
