RHA changes location of elections

November 2, 2011

Representatives in the Residence Halls Association, or RHA, General Assembly passed a bill to retire Van Hoosen Hall as the traditional location to hold RHA presidential elections at its weekly meeting.

After several representatives raised points of debate, the bill passed 27-2.

RHA has grown considerably since it moved into Van Hoosen Hall for elections 42 years ago, and it has passed the capacity for holding elections in the building, representative Chris Rivard said.

Rivard, who introduced the bill, said Van Hoosen Hall’s capacity is 49 people and the RHA General Assembly currently has 58 members. Remaining in Van Hoosen Hall for elections would be dangerous, he said.

RHA President Sarah Pomeroy said she would work to determine an alternate location to hold the elections.

RHA Director of Health and Safety Zach DeRade also said RHA will hold an event called The Breaking Point next month to help students relieve stress before final exams. The event, scheduled for 6-9 p.m. Dec. 2 in the Lincoln Room of the Kellogg Center, will feature a hypnotist and massages as well as other craft activities.

RHA representatives also will attend the Great Lakes Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls conference at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., this weekend. The conference is a student-run event aimed at improving student life and promoting more on-campus initiatives.
