New policies for E.L. winter snow removal

November 13, 2011

As weather gets colder and snow poses a threat to streets and sidewalks, East Lansing officials are preparing to begin the enforcement of a new snow removal ordinance passed earlier this year.

Under the new ordinance, snow that accumulates before noon on a person’s property must be cleared before midnight that same day, and snow that accumulates after noon must be cleared by midnight the following day.

Ice on sidewalks must be cured with sand or salt within 12 hours of formation.

The new ordinance includes a tiered fine system for residents and businesses that fail to comply, with a $25 fine for a first offense, $75 for a second offense and $125 for any additional offenses.
