Rap artist Mac Miller will perform a sold-out show at 7 p.m. Friday at the Auditorium.

When marketing freshman Eric Weinbaum spotted a Residence Halls Association, or RHA, flyer on a table in Holmes Hall cafeteria advertising Mac Miller was coming to East Lansing, he knew his dreams had come true.

“I saw a Facebook event for Mac Miller’s concert toward the end of summer, but nothing was confirmed,” he said. “I saw the flyer and (thought), ‘This is really happening.’”

Malcolm McCormick, known by his stage name Mac Miller, will be performing at 7 p.m. Friday at the Auditorium on his tour entitled The Blue Slide Tour.

The 19-year-old rap artist is well known for his single “Donald Trump.”

RHA Director of Special Events Rodney James began negotiating with Miller’s agency to bring the musician to campus in July. James said he felt the artist exhibits a college-age persona students can relate to.

“My job is to pick artists who I feel students would like to see on campus,” he said.

“(Miller has) a good personality, which is something that resonates with students. It was a perfect fit.”

Because of Miller’s variety of work, Weinbaum said the artist was an excellent choice to bring to MSU.

“His music is versatile — he can make a very lyrical song into a fun party song,” he said. “He’s got a lot of songs with different vibes.”

James said because of the high demand, tickets to Miller’s show were released on Sept. 20 and sold out within the week.

“It’s rare to see a sell out,” he said. “We’ve only seen three to my knowledge.”

Previous sold-out RHA-hosted concerts included rappers Drake and Kid Cudi.

“It’s definitely something special,” James said.

Six years ago, marketing and business freshman Justin Kennedy first discovered Mac Miller’s music.

Kennedy emailed the artist — who at the time was known as Easy Mac — his friend’s instrumental music for him to listen to.

“He liked (it), so I became one of his Internet friends,” he said. “But I haven’t talked to him since he got his music deal (a year ago).”

Kennedy said because of Miller’s bright personality and overall likability, he is happy Miller can have a chance to experience Spartan fans.

“(MSU) is the perfect place because we’re a loving university,” he said.

Because of the success of two Miller concerts he previously attended in his home state of Maryland, Weinbaum said he expects another exciting performance on Friday.

“His concerts are always fun and very hyped,” he said.
