Men's golf finishes 9th at Rees Jones Invite

October 4, 2011

The MSU men’s golf team finished up its competition Tuesday at the 2011 Rees Jones Invitational, finishing in a tie for ninth at the Rees Jones signature course at Haig Point Golf Club at Hilton Head Island, S.C. In the final round of the invitational, the Spartans shot a 23-over par 311 to close out the week at 919, 55-over.

Leading the way for MSU, senior Dan Ellis — for the fourth time in all four fall tournaments — finished in the top 15 and tied Georgia State’s Tyler Gruca, Iowa State’s Sam Daley and Winthrop’s Kamito Hirai for 15th at 9-over par 225. Ellis shot a 74, 76 and 75 to finish.

Senior Chris Mory shot Ellis’ same score to advance in the tournament into a six-way tie at 12-over par 228 for 20th place.

“Dan Ellis and Chris Mory held it together on a tough day, and I am proud of their senior leadership right now,” head coach Casey Lubahn said in a release from the athletics department.

Sophomore Carson Castellani placed 47th in a three-way tie after shooting a 21-over par 237, and junior Matthew Moseley and freshman McCormick Clouser tied each other and Winthrop’s Taylor Dickson for 50th, shooting 22-over par 238.

“(It) was the first day all season that I felt we weren’t at our best in regard to our execution and attitude,” Lubahn said. “This course can really punish bad shots, and our guys got punished (Tuesday).”
