ASMSU condemns racism on campus

October 6, 2011

ASMSU representatives condemned the acts of racism that took place on campus this week in a resolution at their weekly General Assembly meeting Thursday night in Student Services.

Assembly members passed the bill, which condemns the acts of racism and seeks to promote respect for diversity on MSU’s campus.

Representative Robert VanKirk said many students are not aware of the extent to which racism affects students on campus and suggested creating a task force to deal specifically with the issue of bigotry on campus.

The assembly also passed a bill supporting the repeal of the Protecting Academic Freedom in Higher Education Act, which would repeal federal credit hour and state authorization regulations.

The assembly discussed the role of state versus federal rights in defining credit hours at public universities and acknowledged the bill might lead to the “inevitable loss of student input” at a federal level.

But representative Dylan Miller said the bill would give students more voice at a local level.

“This gives us at least some amount of greater control over (the) amount of regulations that we as students have to be under,” he said.

ASMSU officials and representatives will travel to Washington, D.C., next Tuesday through Friday to discuss student concerns at a federal level and promote student government advocacy within other Big Ten universities.
