MSU to receive police officers

September 28, 2011

Three additional community and sexual assault prevention police officers will be working to keep campus safe, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

Michigan’s U.S. senators announced Wednesday that the officers’ salaries and benefits will be funded by a $622,968 federal grant.

Although the grant only will fund the expense of the new officers for three years, they will be a permanent addition to the staff, McGlothian-Taylor said.

A hiring date has not been set for the new officers, she said. Sexual assault prevention and community policing are two priorities for the department, McGlothian-Taylor said.

“Having additional officers to work with the community and work with sexual assault is going to be not only beneficial for our department, but the entire community,” she said. “We’re going to have more officers working with victims and educating the community, so hopefully we don’t have any more sexual assault on campus.”
