How to tie the knot

September 19, 2011

It isn’t until they get a call for a job interview that many students realize they don’t know how to tie a tie. In this step-by-step video, Kellie Rowe and Dillon Davis will show you how to tie a Four-in-Hand knot. (Tie courtesy of John Kure)

Most MSU students walking from class to class aren’t wearing neckties. But when job interviews or formal events arise, many realize they actually don’t know how to tie a tie. Before heading out to buy a clip-on, take a look at these simple steps to learn how to do it the real way. This particular knot is called the Four-in-Hand knot.

1. Place the tie around your neck with the wide end on your left and the narrow end on your right. The wide end should be about 12 inches below the narrow end.

2. Cross the wide end over the narrow end, making an X.

3. Wrap the wide end around the narrow end. The wide end should now be in your left hand, and the narrow end should be in your right hand.

4. Using your left hand, bring the wide end back over in front of the narrow end again. Now the narrow end should be in your left hand, and the wide end should be in your right.

5. Take the wide end and pull it up through the circle around your neck.

6. Thread the wide end through the loop you just made and pull through.

7. You should now have made a loose knot. Adjust the tie by pulling the narrow end down. Ideally, the tip of the tie should touch your belt buckle.
