ASMSU cancels retreat, saves money

September 15, 2011

ASMSU’s annual goal-setting retreat, scheduled for this weekend, has been canceled, ASMSU Director of Media Relations Samantha Artley said.

ASMSU officials canceled the retreat Thursday afternoon — a day before it was scheduled to begin — in favor of using the funds to develop a mobile application for students that tracks the location of CATA buses.

Artley said ASMSU has been talking about creating an app, but it had not allocated funds for developing it into the budget. After talking, ASMSU officials decided the retreat money would be better spent somewhere else, she said.

The retreat was budgeted at about $5,000. It will not be rescheduled, and all of the money will be refunded to ASMSU.

The reallocation was a “spur of the moment” decision to invest in the app, Artley said. The retreat’s cancellation will not affect ASMSU’s plans for the year, and the items that were to be discussed will be moved to a longer general assembly meeting on Sept. 22.

“It’ll end up being the same result for less money,” she said.
