Women's soccer traveling to Eastern Michigan for exhibition

August 9, 2011

With a myriad of experience at key positions, the MSU women’s soccer team will look to start its season strong in an opening exhibition match.

The Spartans will kick off their season with an exhibition match against Eastern Michigan at 5 p.m., Saturday in Ypsilanti, Mich. The match ultimately will serve as a tuneup before the Spartans hold their season opener, which will come on Aug. 19 at DeMartin Stadium at Old College Field against Milwaukee.

MSU is led by junior forward Olivia Stander, senior goalkeeper Jill Flietstra and three-time All-American senior forward Laura Heyboer. The Spartans will look to recover from losing senior defenders Samantha Cook and Courtney Shegos and will lean on younger players to replace the talented duo.

The team will be coached by Tom Saxton, who is entering his 21st season as the head coach of the women’s soccer program.
