Spartans top EMU in exhibition matchup

August 14, 2011

In a season-opening exhibition matchup, the MSU women’s soccer team came away with a 1-0 victory against in-state foe Eastern Michigan.

Junior defensive midfielder Kelsey Kassab’s goal in the 53rd minute proved to be all the offense MSU needed to take out the Eagles on the road. The Spartans fired 29 shots, including five from junior forward Olivia Stander, and limited Eastern Michigan to just nine on the afternoon, despite making several lineup changes throughout the day.

The Spartans played 22 players with just two — Kassab and sophomore defender Annie Steinlage — playing all 90 minutes.

MSU will open its regular season Friday with a game against UW-Milwaukee at 5 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium at Old College Field.
