Burress lands with New York Jets

July 31, 2011

Former Spartan and NFL wide receiver Plaxico Burress signed a one-year contract with the New York Jets Sunday worth $3.017 million.

Prior to reaching an agreement with the Jets, Burress also showed an interest in his former teams the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Giants — with whom he scored the winning touchdown in Super Bowl XLII against the New England Patriots.

Burress hasn’t played on a team since the 2009 season, when he accidentally shot himself in the leg. He subsequently spent 20 months in prison for gun charges before discussing possible contracts with NFL teams.

So far in his career with the Giants and the Steelers — who drafted him eighth overall in the 2000 NFL Draft — Burress has 505 receptions for 7,845 yards and 55 touchdowns.

Burress finished his final MSU season with 66 receptions for 1,142 yards and 12 touchdowns and was named a second-team All-American.
