Senior pitcher Kurt Wunderlich pitched a complete game and allowed only three hits in MSU’s win over Northwestern, 3-0, Thursday at McLane Baseball Stadium.

MSU senior pitcher Kurt Wunderlich was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week Monday, after throwing a complete game shutout to beat Northwestern 3-0 on Thursday.

Wunderlich allowed just three hits and collected three strikeouts through nine innings of work to pick up his ninth win of the season — the most wins in the Big Ten.

“I just kind of went out there and threw a lot of strikes, no walks was a big thing,” Wunderlich said. “I hit the first batter and then after that, I just kind of used the two seam (fastball) and the (changeup) and let the defense work for me.

“I thought (junior pitcher Tony Bucciferro) threw a great game, he was also well deserving of it.”

It marks the second time this season Wunderlich has received the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honor, his last coming on Feb. 28.

The Spartans (34-19, 15-9 Big Ten) will be the No. 2 seed in this week’s upcoming Big Ten Tournament at Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio. The co-Big Ten champions, MSU and Illinois, each receive a first-round bye, and the Spartans will play their first game at 3:35 p.m. Thursday against the winner of the first round Ohio State-Minnesota matchup.
