May 22, 2011

Recording the best place finish ever by a Spartan at the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship, MSU women’s golfer sophomore Caroline Powers tied for sixth with an even-par finish at 288 (70, 76, 96, 73). Her score also is the best 72-hole score earned by a Spartan at the championships, which ended Saturday in Bryan, Texas.

For the season, Powers finishes with a school record average of 73.53, which was set last season by former MSU golfer Laura Kueny at 73.85.

For her performance at the championship, Powers was named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-Region Team and received an All-American honorable mention.

As she entered the final round of the championship Saturday, Powers remained in competition for the national title in fourth place. She finished seven shots behind Louisiana State’s national champion, Austin Ernst, who was seven strokes under par at 281.

Powers was joined by Purdue’s Laura Gonzalez — who finished third at 286 — in representing the Big Ten at the national competition.
