May 8, 2011

For teams with serious postseason dreams, there’s a heavy emphasis on playing well down the stretch and beating tough teams when it counts.

After a 5-3 win against Purdue on Saturday, the MSU baseball team(29-14, 12-5 Big Ten) open up a two-game lead in the conference standings and have guaranteed they come out of the weekend with sole possession of first place.

Once again, senior first baseman Jeff Holm came up huge for the Spartans collecting three hits and an RBI on the day to lead the way against the Boilermakers. The senior co-captain Holm has six hits in the series thus far, including two home runs and seven RBIs.

Junior pitcher Tony Bucciferro gave the Spartans a quality start, giving up seven hits and two runs over 6 ? innings to improve his record on the season to 7-2. The versatile sophomore outfielder and pitcher Tony Wieber pitched a perfect ninth inning for the Spartans to record his fifth save of the season.

The streak continues to grow for sophomore second baseman Ryan Jones. Jones has hit in 32 consecutive games and will surely look to extend the streak in the series finale on Sunday.

The Spartans will go for their second consecutive weekend sweep at 1:05 p.m. Sunday at McLane Baseball Stadium.
