May 15, 2011

After suspending action on Saturday due to darkness, the MSU baseball team fell in 15 innings on Sunday to Indiana at Sembower Field in Bloomington, Ind., 13-12.

The Spartans (31-17 overall, 13-7 Big Ten) started strong on Saturday, leading 8-2 after five and a half innings of play. The Hoosiers (29-21, 10-10) chipped away at MSU’s lead and had the Spartans against the wall 11-8 in the top of the ninth.

Sophomore third baseman Torsten Boss rallied the Spartans and delivered a single, scoring senior outfielder Brandon Eckerle to tie the game. The Spartans battled for three runs in the ninth inning off Indiana closer Ryan Halstead to take the game into extra innings.

When action picked up on Sunday, the score remained tied until Indiana second baseman Micah Johnson drove in a run in the bottom of the 15th inning to down the Spartans.

Hits record
With his four hits during the game, Eckerle eclipsed MSU’s career hits record and ended the day with 249 hits during his career with the Spartans. Eckerle passed Bob Malek’s career mark of 245 hits.
