MSU Hillel Jewish Student Center members grabbed their wallets and swallowed their pride at the organization’s first Kosher Meet Market date auction fundraiser Wednesday night.

Looking for a creative and fun way to replenish the organization’s programming budget, Hillel auctioned off 18 volunteers to an eager and generous crowd at the Landshark Raw Bar & Grill, 101 E. Grand River Ave.

Helping members find the perfect valentine, each volunteer was auctioned off with the introduction of a hidden secret — such as psychology senior Jordan Rosenbaum — who was auctioned off for $50 after he sang his “boy band’s” No. 1 hit, “Pump It Up Tamarack.”

“(The organizer) said, ‘Jordan, you’re a very handsome young man, do you want to be auctioned off to some beautiful young ladies at MSU?’” he said. “I said, ‘Why not, it’s for a good cause, I’ll do anything.’”

Donations were collected from local restaurants and businesses, and volunteers were sought out to participate, said economics sophomore Ari Presant, the fundraising intern for MSU Hillel. At the end of the night, the group raised $1,300.

“We thought it was a great opportunity to get a lot of different people involved and break some people out of their shell,” he said. “(We wanted people to) have a good time and make money for a good cause as well.”

Other volunteers, such as psychology senior Carli Boyer, wanted to give back to the organization because it has given so much to the MSU Jewish student community, she said.

“I’ve been volunteering with Hillel since freshman year,” she said. “I thought it would be nice to give back now.”

Event organizers charged a $5 cover to all patrons but subtracted the charge to the total auctioned price of anyone who purchased a date. Group members also raffled off jewelry, T-shirts and a $100 gift card to Best Buy.

More than 100 Hillel members and friends, such as freshman Lilah Clevey, came out to support the event and give moral support.

“I thought it would be exciting to see everybody get sold, and it’s a fun atmosphere,” she said. “I think (it was) fun and creative, and being traditional is boring.”
