Sidewalk snow removal expected in E.L.

January 30, 2011

In light of the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids forecasting a potential 12 or more inches of snow by Wednesday, students who live off campus and other city residents should be mindful of city ordinances regulating snow and ice removal.

Sidewalks are expected to be cleared within 24 hours of heavy snowfall, according to the city of East Lansing’s website. Similarly, sidewalks should be salted within 12 hours of ice formation.
Residents might be fined $85 for noncompliance.

Additionally, leasing companies might have their own rules for snow and ice removal; students should consult their lease to determine who is responsible for the task.
