Fundraiser to benefit haiti victims

January 11, 2011

A fundraising event to help Haitians hit by the Jan. 10, 2010, earthquake — “Haiti: 1 year later” — will be held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Grotto of Brody Hall.

Donations will benefit two organizations dedicated to bettering Haitian life: Bucoesh and Education for Prosperity. The groups also will provide information booths about the country and disaster.

In addition to the booths, Brimstone Grille in Brody Square will offer a special Caribbean jerk chicken sandwich for the event.

It is important for students to remember that Haiti still is suffering from the earthquake, said MSU doctoral student Louise Michelle Vital, the coordinator of the event.

“Although it has been a year, thousands of Haitians still live in tent cities, and many women and girls have been sexually assaulted and raped as a result of living in these conditions,” Vital said.
