Baseball signs 8 recruits for 2012 season

November 10, 2010

MSU baseball head coach Jake Boss announced Wednesday that eight recruits will join the roster for the 2012 season.

Six players, Ryan Krill, Michael Mestdagh, Jimmy Pickens, Blaise Salter, Chase Toth and Mick VanVossen, are from Michigan.

Krill is a first baseman from Kalamazoo, Mich., and is ranked the No. 3 prospect in the state and among the top 500 players in the nation.

Mestdagh is rated the No. 20 prospect by michiganbaseballprospects.org for his play at outfielder and pitcher for Birmingham Groves High School.

Pickens and Salter are both from Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and both have experience behind the plate as catchers. Salter is No. 5-rated prospect in Michigan and Pickens is No. 6.

“Blaise (Salter) is an outstanding leader, the type of young man who will elevate a program,” Boss said. “He is extremely physical with a strong arm and a tremendous amount of power potential at the plate. He catches and receives extremely well and will be looked upon to contribute heavily as a freshman.”

Boss said that both Toth and VanVossen will look to contribute early in their careers at MSU.

The other two are outfielder Anthony Cheky from Portage, Ind., and shortstop Kevin Goergen from Lemont, Ill.

“Credit needs to go to recruiting coordinator Mark Van Ameyde and assistant coach Graham Sikes for all their hard work and the countless hours they put in to make this recruiting class an outstanding one,” Boss said in a statement. “As we continue to build a program here at Michigan State, this class will be a cornerstone to the successes that are ahead for Spartan Baseball.”
