Former Spartan Thomas picked up by Panthers

October 11, 2010

After being the Washington Redskins’ second-round pick in the 2008 NFL draft and 34th overall, former MSU wide receiver Devin Thomas was cut from the team Saturday by head coach Mike Shanahan, The Associated Press reported Monday.

However, the Carolina Panthers claimed Thomas two days later when they waived reserve offensive lineman Tim Duckworth.

In his 34 NFL career games for the Redskins, the 6-foot-2, 218-pound Thomas caught 40 passes for three touchdowns and 445 total yards. All of his touchdowns occurred during the 2009 season.

During his two years as a Spartan from 2006-07, Thomas shattered several MSU records. As a junior, he posted 79 receptions for the single-season record, and 52 of those either resulted in a touchdown or a first down. In the regular season, he recorded eight touchdowns — fourth in program history for a single MSU season.

Thomas also finished that year with 2,590 all-purpose yards which set another MSU record. Of those, 1,260 were receiving yards, which is third all-time in one season, and that made him the fourth receiver in Spartan history to mark 1,000 receiving yards in a season.
