MSU to expand ties with Africa

September 9, 2010

Officials at MSU and the University of Malawi have partnered to address potential issues preventing African countries from advancing in global development.

The U.S. Agency for International Development and the Higher Education for Development, a nonprofit group, awarded 22 universities in Africa and the United States on Wednesday with up to $1.1 million in grant money to combat areas of concern including food security, energy and education.

The announcement comes after years of meetings to address problems facing not only higher education, but economic and social issues on the continent, said James Pritchett, director of MSU’s African Studies Center.

“It started with a discussion, a realization that in Africa — for the most part — universities are being underutilized,” Pritchett said.

“Because most of these activities take place at the government level, the idea was (bringing) the
scholarship and intellectuality of African universities into the development process.”
